I want to record some recitations in my own voice. Can I do it semi-professionally at home w/ basic equipment?

Please advise if I need to get special mic; type of recording software (open source) and whether I can do it in one of the rooms in my house. Will I need to do anything special in the room? Again, I don't need to create anything fancy, just record some recitations for distribution.
